Trauma and Its Impacts
Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible, often life altering event like an accident, sexual assault, or natural disaster.
Trauma is varied, and each individual experiences it in varying ways.
What is Trauma informed care and practice?
Trauma informed care and practice (TICP) is a strength-based framework that involves recognising, understanding, and responding to the effects of trauma on survivors. The emphasis of TICP is on the physical, emotional, and psychological safety and wellbeing of people and their carers.
Studies conducted in 2011 and 2022 suggest that 57-75% of people in Australia will experience a traumatic event. That is more than half the Australian population!
Other studies indicate that 62-68% of young people have experienced a traumatic event by the age of 17. Almost 60% of men and 50% of women experience trauma in their lifetime.
Certain population groups, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and those who are employed in emergency services, frontline human services and the armed forces are at greater risk of experiencing trauma
Trauma informed care and practice is about emphasising physical, emotional and psychological safety and wellbeingÂ
